Clutches

The clutch mechanism allows us to control how much of the engine power goes into the gearbox and ultimately the wheels which move the car. It also allows to change gear and move off smoothly. The clutch is another component that is affected by general wear and different driving styles which can dramatically decrease the clutch’s life span:-

  • Over revving the engine when maneuvering at slow speed
  • Driving with your foot resting on the clutch pedal
  • Towing heavy loads

Maintenance:

When a clutch needs replacing it will start to “slip”; this is when the two plates of the clutch can’t stay locked together and even though the driver has taken their foot off the clutch pedal completely, the car will just rev & not actually go anywhere. When the clutch starts to slip in this way, the worn clutch plate will need replacing.

Early signs of a worn clutch include 1) you will need to let the pedal up higher than normal to get the clutch to engage and 2) in higher gears the engine will start to rev but there will be a distinct lack of power, very apparent when the vehicle is pulling away quickly or going up a hill.
