Steering
Almost all new cars now come with power steering systems, there are three main types; electrical, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic. Most cars on the road use hydraulic power steering and to be honest it would be hard to tell the difference from a driver’s point of view.
Maintenance:
Power steering needs little or no maintenance you'll be delighted to hear. The power steering fluid occasionally needs topping up with appropriate fluids (not water or engine oil) and you can normally find the filling tank under the bonnet (see owner’s manual for location) or pop your car down to us for a Free Safety Check.
If you find that the power steering is noisy or that you suddenly need to regularly top up the fluid then you may have a problem which should be checked out. We are happy to take a look next time you're passing.
There is one part of the steering that may need replacing called a track rod end, this basically connects the road wheel to the steering mechanism. This joint can sometimes wear causing a knocking noise from the front as well as making the steering feel a little loose.
